Psychoanalysis and literature have made for uneasy yet enduring bedfellows since the time of Freud's early theoretical essays. Jacques Lacan's notorious text "Lituraterre", written after his return from a trip to Japan in 1971, looks afresh at the bonds between the letter and the artefact, inspired by Oriental calligraphy. This text weaves an intricate linguistic web around the themes of: literary criticism in the post-structuralist era; human "geography" and habitats of discourse; the category of the "written" in contradistinction to the "spoken"; ending on the question of Japanese subjectivity and scientific "communication". On the occasion of the first published English-language translation of the text, forty years after its first outing, we will be exploring the lasting pertinence of these themes in the twenty-first century in relation to the issue of the psychoanalytic real.
