WARNING! It looks like the forums has been hacked

Recommended Posts

There have been a very large number of new members joining the forums just this morning. There have been a couple of inappropriate and off topic posts from a couple of these new members with links provided. I would recommend no one click on these links as they are probably sites that can infect your computers.

Being for warned is for armed.

I saw an odd post yesterday and when googling found it was a hacker (I don't think there was a link), then Paul removed it. Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, it appears the fourms are being targeted by spammers.

We should also check OUR email to make sure that we have not been infected by a spambot.

Please see the posts in the Comm & Tech forum for info on Online AV scans.

DEAR FORUMS MEMBERS,

Thanks to those of you who reported these recent spam messages. Using the 'Report Button' is the best way to alert the Moderators about these spam messages.

We are aware of this problem and are working on it, but you are going to see more spam posts before the problem is resolved.

Please do not reply to any of these spam posts either in the Forums. It just makes more for the Moderators to have to clean up.

Again, please use the 'Report Button' only, found at the bottom of each post. Doing so sends an immediate alert to the Moderating Team and is the best and quickest way to alert us quickly.

ONE EXTRA WARNING TO MEMBERS: DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS OR IMAGES IN THESE SPAM POSTS; THEY MAY CONTAIN WORMS, TROJANS, OR VIRUSES THAT COULD INFECT YOUR COMPUTER. ALSO DO NOT VISIT THE SPAMMERS' PROFILES AND CLICK ON LINKS OR CONTACT INFO THEY MAY HAVE POSTED THERE, FOR THE SAME REASON. WE ARE TRYING TO DELETE SUCH THINGS IN THOSE PROFILES BUT UNTIL THE WEBMASTER CAN UPDATE THE VALIDATING SEQUENCE FOR MEMBERS IT'S BECOMING A NON-STOP TASK JUST TO DEACTIVATE THESE SPAMMERS' PROFILES.

Regards,

UPDATE TO SPAMMER ALERT THREAD:

INCIDENTALLY, THE FORUMS WERE NOT HACKED; THEY WERE BEING ATTACKED BY SPAMMERS, WHICH IS A BIT DIFFERENT.

ANYWAY, THE WEBMASTER HAS THIS AFTERNOON DEALT WITH THIS SPAMMING PROBLEM, MAKING CHANGES TO THE SIGN-UP PROCESS.

WE HOPE THIS WILL SMOTHER THE ONSLAUGHT OF SPAMMERS THAT HAVE BEEN SIGNING UP IN A NEVER-ENDING QUEUE.

IF ANY FURTHER SPAM POSTS SHOW UP (AND A FEW MORE MIGHT) THEN THE ADVICE I POSTED ABOVE IN THIS TOPIC STILL STANDS: DO NOT ACCESS OR CLICK ON ANY SPAM MESSAGES POSTED EXCEPT TO UE THE 'REPORT' BUTTON TO ALERT THE MODERATING TEAM.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE QUICK ALERTS. THAT HELPED KEEP THE SPAM MESSAGES FROM GETTING TOTALLY OUT OF HAND.

I am so glad y'all jumped on my warning and took action. I've been offline since yesterday, waiting to see the fall out. I never click on links from an entity I don't know. I really hope no one encountered any problems from these spammers.

Don't all y'all get too elated too soon.

These spammers could maybe find a way around the altered sign-up process so that more stringent screening for sign-ups might eventually prove necessary.

Right now it's so far so good, but . . . .

Fingers X-ed for now.

FORUM SPAMMING ATTACKS CONTINUE TODAY . . .

Yes we know, Gayle. TG tells me that we are getting 6,000(!) attacks per hour from China, alone, but that the Forums is protected to the extent of up to 500K per hour.

TG is still working on it, so keep your fingers X-ed, everybody, for a quick resolution. Let's hope that happens soon.

Meanwhile we entreat your gentle patience.

Thanx!

MORNING MODERATING UPDATE:

HOLA EVERYONE,

WEBMASTER IS STILL WORKING ON RESOLVING THE SPAMMING THE FORUMS HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING.

I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT THOSE SPAMMER SIGN-UPS HAVE BEEN SLOWED TO A COMPARATIVE TRICKLE FROM WHAT THEY WERE ONLY A FEW DAYS AGO; WE'RE GETTING CLOSER TO A RESOLUTION NOW, ANYWAY.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO BEAR WITH US AND CONTINUE WHEN NECESSARY TO USE THE 'REPORT' BUTTON AS YOU HAVE BEEN DOING, IF YOU NOTICE A NEW SPAM POSTING.

AND, AS BEFORE, PLAY THINGS SAFE AND DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING (EXCEPT THE 'REPORT' BUTTON) IN ANY OF THESE SPAM MESSAGES.

REGARDS,

PAUL M.

ANOTHER MORNING MODERATING UPDATE:

JUST FWIW, THE SPAMMING ATTEMPTS SEEM TO HAVE SLOWED SOMEWHAT BUT WE ARE STILL GETTING A FEW. I TRY TO DEACTIVATE THEIR POSTING ABILITY AS SOON AS THEY SIGN UP BUT IT IS AN ONGOING CHORE, AND ALAS, I DO SEEM TO HAVE TO SLEEP SOMETIMES AND A FEW GET THRU THEN.

Y'ALL HAVE BEEN GOOD AND HELPFUL REPORTING THESE POSTS WHEN YOU FIND THEM, THANK YOU. IT HELPS ME MORE QUICKLY DEAL WITH THOSE I MIGHT HAVE MISSED.

WE ARE STILL WORKING ON BLOCKING THESE SPAMMING ATTEMPTS, SO PLEASE CONTINUE TO BEAR WITH US. WE WILL SOON, I'M SURE, FIND A SOLUTION.

REGARDS,

PAUL M.
