Found "like-new" baby rental equipment in Playa Hermosa from Laura Leoti...perfect! https://www.facebook.com/EHOsmile/
  2. Grandkids coming to visit us in Playas del Coco. Anyone know how we can get a playpen, baby carseat and toddler booster carseat?
  3. I have just bought a new laptop and don't think I will have time to transfer my data from my old laptop before I fly to Costa Rica. My husband is also taking his laptop. Will we have trouble crossing the border (Canada to Costa Rica), with three laptops?

    Taking laptops across the border

Good to know...thanks SO MUCH Epacatt2. This is JUST what I needed to hear.

    Taking laptops across the border

Good to know...thanks Eleanor. My husband has heard that they may think you are selling one and will charge you 40% duty.
  6. Hey Canadians...I am now deliberating about what is most cost-effective regards Emergency Medical Insurance. We are coming down end of September and staying AT LEAST a year, but returning for a couple weeks twice during the year. Getting Emergency Medical with Travel Insurance, makes it a huge expense if you need to get it with each trip, back and forth. (However, it does cover a flight home in an emergency, if needed.) We are thinking about just getting Private Medical Insurance in Costa Rica instead, because we have heard that the medical is top-notch (so why would we need a flight home). So, OHIP coverage when in Canada, and Private Medical, if needed, when in Costa Rica, and NO Medical Travel Insurance. Does this sound like a good plan? What have you experienced Canadians found as the best plan???
  7. Based on all the advice we have received from this Forum (most appreciated), we have decided to get Health Insurance from MediSmart. Is there anyone else who has done so, and had the Contract and User Manual translated to English? If so, would you be willing to share, even for a cost?

Best way for medical insurance - Travel vs CR Plan

Thanks everyone for these detailed accounts of your experience and expertise! I'll have to study it more carefully, because now, I'm actually more confused than ever. I am applying for Pensionado Residency, so will have to contribute to CAJA. In my mind, once a member of CAJA, then it is walk-in and pay-as-you-go. Until I become a member of CAJA, I was under the impression that medical assistance would be so costly, that insurance would be the smart way to go. So this inquiry was to find out what others had done. Tibas9 and David's account of CAJA make me feel that I should get private insurance as well, and use a CIMA (or non-CAJA) facility for medical attention. Does anyone have experience with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield private insurance in Costa Rica?

Seaturtlewoman: What is "catastrophic" coverage? Emergency medical? What is INS insurance? David Murray: What is WEA?

I paid for a membership as I need help in processing a Temporary Pensioners Residency. I received my membership number yesterday and sent "legal@arcr.net" an email. Since they did not reply, is there another way to reach them? Thanks for your help. Patsy (Edited to remove copy of actual email sent.)

Thanks so much for your cautions, but we HAVE decided to stay. We have done extensive homework and committed to a one-year rental, after physically meeting with the owner here in Ontario. It will be an adventure for us come what may

EleanorCR - I finished reading the Immigration Guide and you were right...it DID answer a LOT of my questions. I have three questions from reading this material, and wonder if anyone if the forum can answer with their experience: 1) Page 15 says that "Prove that the monthly funds were deposited in Costa Rica". (So, if I claim that I receive a monthly pension, it must be deposited in Costa Rica?) 2) Can the "Proof of Income" be a total from multiple sources? Or must it be one amount declared from one source? 3) This is on page 37 regards Renewing Status, but I am wondering if this applies to #1, as it says: "Demonstrate that you have exchanged the minimum funds required under your residency category"

EleanorCR - I SO MUCH appreciate this great information. For sure, I'll read the Costa Rica Immigration Guide...wow, in all my Googling...I never came across that book. I'll read it now! Also, we would consider the most economical route as we have just learned that the ARCR fees are significant when converted to Canadian dollars. Epicatt2 - Let me restate what I think you said. That I would get my papers issued here in Canada, notarized, and then "legalized" by the Costa Rican Embassy in Toronto, and then bring them with us when we come down in October. Then have them translated to Spanish in Costa Rica, together with our passports, and finally take them to the Cost Rica Immigration Department. At that point, while our application is being processed, we are no longer subject to the 90-day maximum tourist stay requirement. Does that sound correct? Costaricafinca - We are planning to stay for 1-3 years, so we would not be applying for Permanent status. How long does it actually take for Immigration to process our Temporary Pensioners Status? And finally, are they benefits beyond the 90-day issue? Such as being able to take advantage of health care?

Hey...Canadians...what are the REAL benefits of applying for a Temporary Pensioners Residency? ARCR has just sent me a note about the application costs and we would like to weigh the cost/benefits...thanks!

Sea Turtle Woman: What residency did you apply for? Would I assume that a Temporary Pensioners Residency would not take as long as a Permanent Residency?

Hmmmm...how do I reply to one of these comments? Just do it here, and put in their name? I assumed that I could go to one of the replies and comment directly on it as a sub-comment, but don't see how.
  24. Thanks...that link worked. The status we are seeking is the Temporary Pensioners Residency. Hopefully that won't take that long to acquire with the ARCR's legal assistance. I have sent them a letter today.
  25. The link in your reply does not work: http://costaricaembassy.be/en/consulate/other_services/travelling_with_pets_into_costa_rica/ I'd love to know the rules about bringing down our 22lb Cockapoo. For example, if we return to Canada for a Christmas visit with our family, can we leave our dog down there in a kennel for a week or so?
